Outrageous: letter of rejection sent to one of my PhD's applying for job: "Thank you for your application... By this time you certainly realize that it was not successful.”. Naming no names, but, VH at RC? You know who you are. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Wow. Amazingly tacky.

I've gotten bad letters (grad school, jobs). The worst are those in which the rejection letter brags about how great their new hire is.

But your student's letter? Worst of all. I wish we could publish all of those letters, so we'd know where NOT to send our own undergrads for grad school.

I actually know this person, though not well, and although the wording of the letter is extremely unfortunate, I do not think that it was written with malicious intent. I am sorry that any potential job candidate had to receive this. Perhaps we need a "how to write a rejection letter" blogpost (not that this person will ever see it, but I would be interested in some tips.)
