Great stuff in bad films

July 4 they're showing all the Americana and patriotic bullshit they can on the tube, including Field of Dreams (which is both Americana, patriotic, and bullshit), but there's a line in that film that would go through most American men like a knife.

At the end of the flick, when Ray Kinsella has managed to resist his banker brother-in-law's blandishments to sell the farm he's plowed under to make a diamond for a ghost baseball team, and the JD Salinger character has walked off into the corn with Shoeless Joe Jackson, only the catcher is left on the field. Kinsella turns and sees him, the player turns toward him, and Kinsella says "Oh, my God. It's my father."

I lost my father too young--twice. That line does it for me.
