Busy day, no time to write anything coherent. But, just came from a great rehearsal with these guys, and heading off to a rehearsal with these guys. One recipe I've found for a satisfying musical life is to be in multiple different ensembles, and to make sure that my role/authority is different in different groups. Being exclusively a sideman is a bad scene, being exclusively a leader is worse. Much better to be a sideman in one situation, an equal-among-equals in other, a leader in a third, director in a fourth. Keeps the pipes clear and prevents calcifying into only one way of relating to other musicians.
Gotta run!

I really do have to use that line, don't I?...
ReplyDeleteYep. We should first confirm whether it was Clark or Lewis who wrote it.
